The urge for someone to smoke stems mainly from any emotional need or any behavioral pattern. The need to smoke can be triggered by any emotions. Anger, joy or any emotion, or just a cup of coffee could be considered as the reasons for which people tend to smoke. Stress seems to be one of the biggest causes that trigger the need to smoke. Most people think that it alleviates stress. This is why smokers have an urge to smoke as they are under as emotional stress
The euphoria that nicotine creates in our brain is only short lived. The stress hits back harder and stronger. It develops into a vicious cycle of sorts. Quitting smoking can create a stress of its own. The lack of access to nicotine for the body and brain is a main cause for the stress. Nicotine withdrawal can be taxing and stressful. The first few days or weeks are the hardest. The person tries eagerly to shake off a habit that has been part of your daily life for years. Such factors can add up to the stress creating an urge to smoke.
Eat well and exercise better. Drink ample amount of fluids. This will enable to flush the system of all the toxic pile up. Small things like taking a long walk or relaxing with a warm bath or doing things like getting a good massage can divert the mind from smoking. Try to avoid caffeine. It can trigger the urge to smoke. Other things should manifested that can divert the mind. These may vary from person to person, watch a movie, read a good book or take out some family time. Taking a multivitamin supplement and eating healthy is also the key. It is hard to resist the urge to smoke. At that time one will have to try to occupy and divert the mind completely from the thought.
