Smoking is cited as the number one cause of lung cancer. It contains about four thousand different chemicals all of which are known to be carcinogenic or cancer causing. The risk of lung cancer in smokers is directly proportional to the number of cigarettes one smokes. It not only brings about many chemical changes in the brain but it also affects all the organs in the body. It can lead to heart disease, respiratory problems, aggravate asthma and many more. One cigarette can have a bad affect on one’s health.

As person stops smoking, the risk of developing lung cancer drops drastically. It also replaces the damaged cells in the lung with new and normal cells. A prolonged smoker is always prone to various diseases.

The chemicals in the smoke affect the lungs. It develops cancer. They are also known to cause other respiratory disorders like bronchitis and emphysema and heart disease. The primary smoker is affected with this along with the passive smoker.

Lung cancer takes many years to develop. The changes that take place in the lung can start almost as soon as the person is exposed to carcinogenic substances or cancer causing chemicals. The development of these abnormal cells is increased. This is mainly if the person is exposed to these cancer-causing agents continuously and they in turn may become cancerous and form a tumor.

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the treatment for lung cancer. Other than the treatment the pain and hectic lifestyle as a cancer patient is intolerable. This can be prevented by stopping exposing the lungs to these cancer-causing agents. It is always good to live in a carcinogen free atmosphere. Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer; quitting smoking can be one of the primary ways to not develop lung cancer.
