The human body has a delicate balance. It has a self-sustenance mechanism that helps it repair any damage. The body is aware of the various changes that take place in it. The body does other repairs on itself. After a surgery, the body itself can recover over a period of time. The damages that are caused in the lungs are mainly due to some thing like inhalation. This self-destruction mechanism is being forced on the system. Gradually the body weakens in its wake. This can lead to health problems. Smoking is one such habit that debilitates the body’s functions.
The lungs are made up of small air sacs that interchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood capillaries. The walls of the alveoli that regulate it control this exchange. Smoking can damage this delicate function and render them inflamed causing the lungs to enlarge. This causes a mechanical disadvantage to the chest. Smoking can lead to shortness of breath and other breathing problems.
Chronic bronchitis is a leading problem for a smoker’s phase. This is because of the presence of inflammatory cells in the air passages. It ultimately obstructs them and cause disruption in the breathing process. These thickened airways causes’ inflammation. The enlargement of the mucus producing cells in the air passages lead to excess mucus to enter the lungs resulting in cough. Other than the normal symptoms it may even result in hemoptysis.
COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a resultant condition of smoking. There are other forms of emphysema that may not be related to smoking. Such problems may stem from the work place. At times, it may also be due to genetic predisposition like familial emphysema. Most cases of this condition are from smoking and the effect of this would lead to destruction of the lungs and air passages.
